  17. <p>    Though eight members of the Ku Klux Klan served prison
  18. sentences on federal charges of conspiring to deny the civil
  19. rights of Andrew Goodman, James Chaney and Michael Schwerner, no
  20. state charges were ever filed against the killers of the three
  21. civil rights workers, who were slain near Philadelphia, Miss.,
  22. during the Freedom Summer of 1964. That may now change. Two
  23. weeks ago, Mississippi Attorney General Mike Moore announced
  24. that he is considering reopening the case.

  26. <p>    Philadelphia has been trying to live down its reputation for
  27. racial violence, which was revived by the movie Mississippi
  28. Burning, loosely based on the case. Last week several hundred
  29. people gathered to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the
  30. crime. Relatives of the slain workers then journeyed to
  31. Washington for another commemoration and a White House meeting
  32. with President Bush, who described the young men as heroes. But
  33. when the families implored Bush to promise that he would
  34. support attempts to reverse a recent Supreme Court ruling
  35. widely considered to be a setback for civil rights, the
  36. President declined.
